Texas president is in favor of beer sales at football games
Beer sales at Texas football games could be happening fairly soon.
New UT president Greg Fenves wants to sell beer at football games, saying "I do support beer sales at football games" during his first new conference.
Fenves also said that the sale of alcohol "enhances the fan experience, and makes coming to the Longhorn games more attractive."
We'll let you go ahead and make a joke about how much more tolerable Texas' 2014 season would have been with alcohol available in-house.
A report emerged in early 2014 that the school was considering implementing beer sales last year. However, the school's then-chancellor Francisco Cigarroa said there was more time needed to experiment with sales at other events. Basketball, baseball and track events have sold alcohol.
Alcohol was sold at the 2014 spring game. Now that sales have been happening for over a calendar year and Fenves is publicly (and directly) on board, it may just be a matter of time before they happen at Darrell K. Royal Stadium.
Alcohol sales are, of course, a way to increase revenue, and athletic director Steve Patterson has been adament about expanding Texas' brand and its revenue sources. And they can be a way of preventing fans from leaving the stadium at halftime to go back to their tailgates. Texas does not have a no re-entry policy stated on its website.
Sales would have to be formally approved by UT system chancellor William McRaven and possibly voted on by the board of regents. The board meets twice before the season begins.
